1. Put on Lfe Jackets Immediately
Although many people cannot stand it for some reason, it is a good idea to always wear a life jacket while onboard a ship. This is especially true as soon as there is any indicator of inclement weather heading your way. Trust us, with unpredictable tides and waves, you don’t want to be swept off the ship without one.
2. Lock Equipment and Items Down
One of the largest hazardous during poor weather isn’t always the sea, but your stuff. During these types of conditions, it is easy for things to start flying around. Just as you don’t want your radio to fall into the ocean blue so too do you not want to get struck in the head by falling fishing rod.
3. Don’t Touch Metal if Lightning Storm
This should be just common sense. But during hazardous situations, it is easy to lose one’s head. Most boats are full of metal all over the place so you have to be sure to pay attention that you are not grabbing onto a railing for support or something like that. Stick away from the metal and you’ll be alright.

This is why it is important to have a good captain. Anybody can pilot a ship through some calm seas. It takes experience to steer you through a storm. The most important rule is to steer bow at a 45 degree angle. This prevents waves from crashing into you or the ship so you can stay as dry as possible.
5. Call the Coast Guard During a Bad Storm
When things get really bad, that’s when you should call the Coast Guard. That’s one of the main jobs in fact! They are there to make sure people are safe at sea. If a bad storm is on the horizon and you are not close to the shore, it is essential that you alert that Coast Guard!
Even if you can make it back safely, it is good precaution so they can know where to send a rescue ship if necessary.
