When: In just a few short weeks, America’s Cup 2016 kicks off, taking place from June 10-12 starting at Chicago’s Navy Pier.

How to get in: Although the best viewing areas are ticketed areas, there is also an area on on the west end of the Navy Pier available for the general public. Note: boaters will need a pass to get to the viewing area on the water. All tickets can be purchased online. On the east end of the Navy Pier, America’s Cup attendees will find the Alvalle Race Village. This requires a ticket but other than being out on the water, offers the best view of the racing.

The famous line spoke back in 1851 to Queen Victoria when she inquired who was in second place during the first America’s Cup embodies the level of competition in this race which was actually named after a boat from the New York Yacht Club that would go on to defeat the British team. The young democracy of the United States held the title of champion for over 100 years.

The modern day racing boats are state of the art catamarans with twin hulls that can reach speeds of up to 35 knots.Boats must meet standardized requirements to create a level “playing field” where the sailor’s skills is the competitive edge.

Steeped in history, the racing teams represent the United States, Great Britain, Japan, France, New Zealand and Sweden and the teams are made up of the world’s most accomplished sailors.
