Winterize Your Boat! Boatsetter’s Tips for Boat Storage

It is officially Fall, which means colder weather is around the corner and experts from Boatsetter, the #1 Boat Rental Community, are encouraging boat owners who live in colder regions to properly winterize their boat. We've compiled a list of Boat Owner winterization tips to help the boating community get ready for the cold weather.

Boat Owners Winterization Tips

Freezing temperatures and extreme winter weather can devastate unprepared boats, damaging fiberglass, hoses and even engine blocks. Taking preventative measures to winterize boats exposed to colder temperatures can save boat owners time and money while preserving the life of their boat. To safeguard against cold weather, Boatsetter recommends that boat owners take the following precautions and consult their boat’s owner’s manual to determine additional necessary actions:
  • Store boats in a dry, climate-controlled facility
  • Fill the fuel tank to near capacity and add a stabilizer to gasoline
  • Change fuel filters or separators
  • Change oil and oil filters
  • Check coolant levels and add coolant if necessary
  • Place batteries on a marine charger or an at-home trickle charger
  • Drain all on-board water and wipe up all standing water
  • Add or run antifreeze through all systems designated by your boat’s owner’s manual
  • Ensure all plugs and bulbs are sealed with moisture protection
  • Perform a full inspection of the propeller and hull of the boat
  • Conduct a deep clean of the boat
  • Secure all ports and hatches
  • Remove all food, gas canisters and portable electronics
  • Lock cabin areas and storage compartments

Unable to store your boat?

Boat owners who are not able to store their boat in a dry facility because of availability, the size of the vessel, or affordability, should still consider removing their boat from the water for the winter. They should cover the vessel with a tarp or consider having it professionally shrink wrapped. Those deciding to leave their boat in the water for the off-season should ensure their boat is equipped with a waterproof cover and securely tied down. Boat owners should also regularly check their boat for damage, leaks, hull blisters and theft. Boat owners not comfortable with winterizing their boat themselves can enlist the help of boat mechanics or marine service centers that provide winterization services. Whether a boat is used for personal use including fishing, cruising, sailing or any other water sports or activities or needs to stay in good working order for boat rentals next boating season, a full winterization will help ensure everyone has a chance to get out on the waterways.
