Halloween? We’re going as these famous nautical characters!
Who doesn’t love Halloween? It’s fun for all ages whether it is candy for kids or parties for adults. This year, instead of being something boring like a ghost or superhero, why not recreate one of these famous sea characters. Don’t worry, we have much better tips than just dressing up as a pirate or boat captain. Here are our top five choices for the best Halloween costume that are sure to be a splash at any event this year.
Why dress up as a pirate when you can go as the greatest pirate of all time, Madame Ching? The most legendary western pirate, Blackbeard, at his peak commanded four ships and 300 men. Madame Ching had over 1,800 ships and 80,000 men. Her red flag fleet never lost a battle against the Chinese empire, the Portuguese and the British. Ultimately, the Chinese government was happy she offered to retire and in return gave her a position in the imperial government.
Again, you can go as a sailor with the traditional suit and hat or you can be the god of the sea. Poseidon was respected for his great power over not all the ocean, but also horses and earthquakes. His signature trident and robes can be found at most costume stores. Just make sure you either grow a great beard or find a good fake one at a local shop!
Andy Samberg: I’m on a Boat
Everybody loves I’m on a boat and that music video is filled with great costume ideas. Lonely Island is looking fresh in a collection of aquatic outfits. To make it even better, see if you can put some pieces of cardboard together and create a fake boat around you- some white paint, some lettering and it will look nearly as good as the real thing.
Giant squids are the most feared creatures of the deep. Sailors used to say that the squids used to pull the nails straight out of the boat hulls. The creature is famous for how elusive it is and scientists still have never captured a living specimen. This costume doesn’t even take that much work- all you need are some pieces of fabric and as many tentacles as you wish!
These days, everybody does Captain Jack Sparrow or something else from Pirates of the Caribbean. But, why not be the 90’s movie classic, Captain Ron. Probably one of the top ten boat movies, the film is about a straight-laced family man who decides to take his family on a sailing trip. Captain Ron is supposed to take them to Miami, but his wild antics lead them into all kinds of hilarious mishaps. Among millennials, Captain Ron is a legend of 90’s nostalgia.
So Many Possibilities
The best thing about Halloween is it is a day for both kids and adults to dress up and be someone else. These are all great ideas to experiment with and see what works best for you. Who knows maybe you will end up creating your own hit costume!
