Forget Bar Crawls, Join the Reef Crawl in the Keys!
Exploring the Ocean Depths with a Florida Keys Boat Rental
Can you imagine renting a boat for a couple of nights around Key Largo? The Reef Crawl Florida Keys is a four-day event that usually takes place during late August. Based on the idea of a pub crawl, Reef Crawlers start in Key Largo and make their way down the coast to Islamorada on a mission to explore all of the bountiful reefs, wrecks, mangroves, and other ecosystems of the Upper Florida Keys.
Sailing away to Key Largo
Key Largo is the unofficial starting point of the Upper Florida Keys. The John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park, the first underwater marine park in the U.S., is a good starting point for snorkeling and diving adventures. With a Florida Keys boat rental, there is really no shortage of things to do along with your fellow Reef Crawlers. Some highlights include kayaking and deep-sea fishing, which is considered the best in the world. Catch mahi-mahi, tuna, tarpon, and grouper on deep sea fishing trips with your fellow Reef Crawlers.
The Ghosts of Ships Gone By
Use your Florida Keys boat rental to explore some of the many wrecks in the area with your fellow Reef Crawlers. For example, the USS Spiegel Grove and the USCG Duane. The Spiegel Grove is a 510-foot landing ship, which was intentionally sunk in 2002 in 130-feet of water near Dixie Shoals in Key Largo, and now the Spiegel Grove makes up the base of the artificial reef system in the area. Reef Crawlers can see the enormous biodiversity that has arisen around the wrecked Spiegel Grove. The USCG Duane was also intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef. Because of its depth and strong currents, the Duane is the perfect wreck dive for advanced SCUBA divers. Schools of impressive fish like cobia, barracuda, and amberjack can often be seen swimming around the wreck.
Reef Crawlers, as well as locals, refer to Islamorada as a village of islands. After spending the day on the water, dock your Florida Keys boat rental at the Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina, a safe, secure, and inviting place. Named by Yachting Magazine as one of the “Top 50 Marina Destinations in the World”, the marina is the perfect place for reef crawlers to rest and enjoy metered electric and water, sewage pump out, Wi-Fi, and sales of unleaded and diesel fuel. Also, you can use one of the grills to cook your catch of the day at the tiki-style social pavilion and then enjoy other facilities and activities at the adjacent Islamorada Founders Park.
